Privacy Policy — MarkArea

MarkArea ("the app", package com.greenwhiteduck.markarea) is a screenshot annotation tool for Android. This policy explains what the app accesses and why.

Data We Collect

MarkArea does not collect, upload, or share any personal information. We have no account system and no backend server that receives your data. All your screenshots and edited images stay locally on your device.

Photos and Media Access

The app requests access to your images (READ_MEDIA_IMAGES / on older Android versions READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) for one single purpose: to detect, list, and open your screenshots so you can annotate them, and to save your edits back to your gallery. Images are read and processed locally on your device only and are never transmitted off the device by us.

Advertising

The app shows ads via Google AdMob. To serve ads, Google's advertising SDK may access your device's Advertising ID (AD_ID) and related telemetry data as described in Google's privacy policies. For users in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, the app shows a Google-certified consent form (User Messaging Platform) before personalized ads are served.

To opt out of personalized ads, go to your device's Settings → Google → Ads → Delete advertising ID (Android 12+) or enable "Opt out of Ads Personalization" on earlier versions.

Fonts

Some display fonts are downloaded at first launch from Google Fonts (fonts.gstatic.com) and cached on your device for offline use. No personal data is sent during this process.

Background Service

When the screenshot detection feature is enabled, the app runs a foreground service that monitors your device's media storage for new screenshots. This service displays a persistent (low-priority) notification so it is always visible to you. It only reads file paths and metadata from your gallery — it never reads image contents, and no data leaves your device. You can stop the service at any time from within the app.

Notifications

The app posts a local notification when it detects a new screenshot. This mechanism is handled entirely on-device.

Children's Privacy

The app is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect or request data from children.

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change accordingly.
